Ever since I was young, say 12 or 13, I've been really into computers and programming.  Mind you, when I was that young, the most popular computers people were buying were either the Apple IIe, the Commodore 64 or the IBM-PC. So, needless to say, I've been programming a pretty long time.

Part of the joy in programming for me was the structure.  I could come across a problem, break it down, figure out how to solve it, then write the code to solve things.  Everything was logical, everything had an order, everything was pretty easy to figure out .. eventually.

Back in the mid-1990's, I started doing web development using HTML.  Being the programmer I was, I didn't use any of those WYSIWYG editors.  I was using a text editor and writing straight HTML code to make my web pages.  Being a sort of programming language, everything was structured there too....at least behind the scenes and in the code.    It was something I enjoyed, turning all that code into something nice looking.

Over the years, I've designed a NeverWinter Nights Persistent World Server, I actually worked at an MMO company for several years.  And my day job has always been programming and problem solving.  But you know, when your output, when your release is always so structured, like code, it affects the more creative aspects of your personality.

I can do pretty much anything with a web page.  You want a web interface that lets you move objects in a DIV, and track hundreds of units?  Yea, I can do that.  You want a web interface that lets you design your credit card?  Yea, I can do that too.  You want all of that with a slick, pretty interface that makes the user say "Wow!  That looks HOT!"   Yea.....that's where the fail comes in.

I see the page as something to be broken down and divided in neat little parcels.  The title goes there at the top, and the body goes over there on the right side, with a menu on the left.  Oh, and that footer...yea, that goes on the bottom somewhere.  It can do the job, but it looks dull and boring.  What can I say, I suck pretty bad at creating an awesome looking interface.

And that's where we come to the point of this entry.  Why do I do these 3D renders?

Using Poser, I can play with the numbers on the dial to affect change on the scene.  I can get an idea in my head about a rough picture, then I can place objects and play with the numbers to move things around, bend things, twist things and all that fun stuff.  If I do my math right, I get a nice looking scene (well, nice looking to me at least).   Sure, it's not the best out there, but it's my attempts of using the skills that I have in a way that can help me in areas I know I'm not so skilled in...i.e. being artistically creative.  It's not much, but it does help.

Why do I do this? by RowellK, journal
